Following the brutal killings of 16 northern travellers in Uromi, Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has been lauded across political divides for his swift and decisive handling of the situation. Okpebholo’s actions, including condemning the violence, visiting the scene, and ensuring the arrest of perpetrators, have helped restore normalcy to the region.
Legal practitioner and PDP chieftain, Barrister Jefferson Uwoghiren, praised the governor’s response, saying it was a sign of strength and strategic leadership. “Apology is not a sign of weakness. It’s the ultimate sign of strength,” he noted.
Gimba Kakanda, Senior Special Assistant to the President, also commended Okpebholo’s well-articulated and decisive response, expressing confidence in the leadership of the state government and its commitment to justice.
Former Chief Press Secretary to Governor Obaseki, John Mayaki, further emphasized that Okpebholo’s actions extended beyond condemnation. He visited key stakeholders, including the bereaved families and Kano State government, and established a committee to support the victims’ families. The governor also made an apology to Kano State, speaking in Hausa to demonstrate empathy and unity.
Okpebholo’s swift actions, including the suspension of illegal vigilante groups and the arrest of key figures in connection to the killings, have been hailed as signs of his firm commitment to justice and rule of law.
