PETER OBI LAMENTS ₦7 TRILLION IN ALLEGED BUDGET PADDING, CALLS NIGERIA A ‘CRIME SCENE’

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned what he calls entrenched corruption in Nigeria following revelations that ₦6.93 trillion worth of questionable projects were inserted into the 2025 national budget.
Citing BudgIT’s investigation into over 11,000 suspicious budget line items, Obi stated that the figures represent only a “glimpse” of a broader pattern of mismanagement. He argued that such fraud undermines key national priorities.
“How else do we explain the shocking revelation of nearly ₦7 trillion padded into the national budget?” Obi wrote. He pointed out that the alleged padding exceeds the combined budgets of the Ministries of Education, Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Agriculture.
Calling Nigeria “a crime scene,” Obi reiterated his demand for urgent fiscal reforms and realignment of public spending toward education, health, and poverty alleviation, saying: “We must urgently redirect our resources to serve the people, not a few corrupt interests.”
