POLICE OPERATION TURNS DEADLY IN IBADAN AS 14-YEAR-OLD BOY KILLED BY STRAY BULLET
in a rather sad development, Widespread protests erupted in Ibadan May 20th Tuesday morning after 14-year-old Kehinde Alade was shot dead by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer during a traffic enforcement operation along Alakia–Gbagi Road.
Witnesses say the boy’s father, Odunayo Alade, was driving against traffic when officers attempted to stop him. A policeman allegedly fired at the car’s tyres, but the bullet struck Kehinde, who was seated behind the driver.
Residents carried the boy’s body to the State Secretariat, demanding justice. The Oyo State Government called the incident “sad, shocking and painful,” confirming the officer involved is under investigation.
The Oyo Police Command said the driver fled aggressively and was suspected of abduction or criminal activity. Officers allegedly fired in an attempt to disable the car, but tragedy followed.
Police Commissioner Adebola Hamzat has ordered a full investigation and deployed tactical units to prevent unrest. Rights advocates and residents are calling for prosecution and accountability over what they describe as a reckless and preventable killing.
