Police to resume enforcement of permits for tinted windows

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to resume enforcement of rules governing tinted glass permits for vehicles, reviving a long-standing regulatory requirement aimed at curbing insecurity. Under the renewed directive, vehicle owners will be required to present valid permits for tinted windows during road stops and other checks, with officers empowered to issue sanctions for non-compliance.

The tinted glass policy originally instituted to help security agents identify vehicles and enhance visibility during patrols was relaxed in recent years but is now being reactivated as part of broader policing reforms intended to strengthen situational awareness on Nigeria’s roads. Police say the measure can assist in reducing crimes such as kidnapping, carjackings and other clandestine activities that exploit privacy afforded by excessively dark window films.

Motorists are being advised to visit designated police stations to obtain the necessary clearance and compliance certificates before applying tint films, with enforcement set to begin in phases across states. NPF officials emphasise that the initiative is not aimed at punitive action against lawful drivers, but rather at promoting road safety and security cooperation between law enforcement and citizens.

The tinted glass enforcement policy has been controversial in the past, with civil liberties advocates cautioning that it could lead to harassment if not applied judiciously. Police authorities say refresher training and community engagement will accompany the rollout to ensure transparency and fairness in implementation.
