Abuja — The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs has commended diplomatic efforts that led to the release of a group of Nigerians detained in Saudi Arabia. The lawmaker described the development as proof that Nigeria’s foreign missions are actively protecting the interests of citizens abroad.
According to the senator, the Nigerians were held over alleged violations of immigration and residency regulations but were freed after sustained engagement between Nigerian diplomats and Saudi authorities. He praised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for prioritising dialogue and ensuring the safety and dignity of Nigerians in the diaspora.
The lawmaker, however, urged Nigerians travelling abroad to always comply with the laws of their host countries, warning that ignorance or disregard of foreign regulations often leads to avoidable arrests. He reiterated that the Senate will continue to work with the executive to strengthen consular services and provide adequate support for Nigerians facing challenges abroad.
