SENATE MULLS CLASSIFYING OIL THEFT AS TERRORISM
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, through Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, announced that the 10th National Assembly is weighing a legislative proposal to classify large-scale crude oil theft as a form of terrorism. The proposal was presented during a Senate public hearing on crude oil theft, held in Abuja on Thursday, May 15th.
Akpabio emphasized that digital meters, real-time tracking of crude movement, and mandatory transparency in export documentation would be introduced under tougher regulatory reforms. The Senate is also pushing for better inter-agency coordination involving security operatives, anti-corruption bodies, and international allies to trace and recover stolen crude oil more effectively. He vowed that agencies failing in their duties would face stricter legislative scrutiny.
