SERMON REGULATION NOT A SOLUTION, RELIGIOUS LEADERS WARN

Religious leaders across Nigeria have expressed concern over growing calls in some quarters for the regulation of sermons, stressing that such a move could infringe on the fundamental right to freedom of worship and expression.

In recent weeks, debates on sermon vetting have resurfaced following attempts in some states to impose stricter religious guidelines. Clerics argue that while the government may seek to curb hate speech, extremism, or divisive rhetoric from pulpits, blanket regulation of sermons is neither practical nor constitutional.

Faith-based leaders insisted that the solution lies in fostering responsible preaching, interfaith dialogue, and stronger self-regulation by religious bodies. They also warned that government interference in sermons could be misused for political gains, silencing dissenting voices under the guise of maintaining peace.

Observers say the controversy reflects Nigeria’s delicate balance between religion and governance. With religion holding deep sway in society, any state-led attempt to regulate faith practices could easily spark widespread backlash. Analysts urge caution and stress that inclusivity, rather than regulation, remains the sustainable path toward national cohesion.
