SOLE ADMINISTRATOR OF RIVERS SNUBS HOUSE PANEL OVER EMERGENCY RULE OVERSIGHT
The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), did not attend a scheduled meeting with the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight on Thursday, 24th April. The meeting, set for 3:00 PM at the National Assembly Complex, was intended to discuss the ongoing political situation in Rivers State following the declaration of a state of emergency. After waiting for over 30 minutes without any communication from Vice Admiral Ibas, the committee members, led by House Leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, left the venue visibly displeased.
This is the second time the meeting has been postponed. The initial session, scheduled for the previous week, was deferred indefinitely at the request of Vice Admiral Ibas. House Spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi stated that the committee is coordinating a new date for the session and will inform the public accordingly.
The House of Representatives had earlier approved the state of emergency in Rivers State, following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration, and resolved to take over legislative functions of the state’s House of Assembly in line with Section 11(4) of the Constitution. Consequently, a 21-member ad-hoc committee was constituted to oversee the state’s governance during the emergency period.
