Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has accused the Nigerian government of applying double standards in the treatment of citizens, particularly highlighting what he sees as disproportionate targeting of Igbo Nigerians.
Speaking on Arise News’s Prime Time show, Sowore said, “If you are Nigerian, you can get away with a lot of things, but if you are Igbo, you cannot.” He cited incidents where other groups appear to evade arrest or prosecution, while Igbo individuals are swiftly penalized.
Sowore pointed to the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, as emblematic of systemic bias. He challenged Igbo political leaders, saying some may prefer to maintain the status quo rather than fight for their people’s rights. He also called for consistent application of justice across all ethnicities.
Sowore’s remarks come in the context of his planned “Free Kanu” protest to Aso Rock, which the Presidency has condemned. The activist insisted that the protest, which he says is meant to highlight these injustices, will remain peaceful and lawful.
