SSANU WARNS OF FRESH STRIKE OVER SALARY DELAYS
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a stern warning to the federal government over persistent delays in the payment of salaries, particularly after its departure from the controversial Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS). In a formal letter addressed to the Director of the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) and copied to key ministries, SSANU said the recurring delays amount to discrimination and could trigger industrial unrest.
Signed by SSANU President Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, the letter accused the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) of breaching a 2022 agreement that guaranteed no punitive action or victimisation following SSANU’s previous strike. Since leaving IPPIS, SSANU says its members have experienced systemic salary delays—sometimes receiving pay up to two weeks after other federal workers.
“This situation threatens the fragile industrial peace currently being enjoyed in our nation’s university system,” Ibrahim warned, describing the delays as administrative sabotage and a breach of trust. He cautioned that further lapses could prompt fresh industrial action if university workers continue to feel marginalised.
The union’s demands include immediate alignment of university salary schedules with other public sector payments and a commitment to prevent future delays. The letter also emphasized that any future inaction would be viewed as deliberate, forcing SSANU to take what it described as “necessary steps to protect the rights and dignity” of its members. As tensions rise, the government now faces renewed pressure to maintain stability in the educational sector.
