Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr. Ikechukwu Ugwuegede as the South-East representative on the board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The nomination comes after criticism that the board’s previous composition excluded the South-East geopolitical zone.
Ugwuegede, a lawyer and politician who served as Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) between 2011 and 2015 and contested the Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency seat in 2019, was proposed in a letter read by Senate President Akpabio during plenary. The President urged the Senate to confirm his nominee expeditiously, assuring full confidence in his capacity to contribute to Nigeria’s digital and telecom policy development.
The nomination was welcomed by stakeholders who viewed it as addressing regional balance in federal regulatory appointments. Observers noted that the new commissioner will join a board already populated with representatives from other zones, and will be expected to help shape the NCC’s direction on telecommunications licensing, digital inclusion, and bridging the regional connectivity gap in Nigeria’s ICT landscape.
