Youth Groups urge Tinubu to caution Youth Minister over NYCN Crisis

Several youth organisations have petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution the Minister of Youth and Sport over what they described as mismanagement in the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), which has been embroiled in factional disputes. The groups say the crisis undermines youth representation and service delivery.

Representatives of the youth groups demanded stronger federal oversight, transparent mediation and an immediate engagement that would result in a credible, united leadership for the NYCN. They argued that the council’s dysfunction is depriving the nation of a coherent platform to articulate youth concerns on employment, skills development and civic participation.

The petitioners urged the presidency to ensure that any ministerial interventions protect the council’s autonomy while prioritising a consensus-driven resolution. They also asked for an independent audit of NYCN finances and elections to restore confidence among youth constituencies.

In response, palace sources indicated the presidency would review the representations and consider facilitating a round-table between the factions, the ministry and neutral third parties to expedite reconciliation and restore normal operations.
