Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has dismissed widespread rumours of his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring his unwavering commitment to the party despite mounting speculation and overtures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the emerging opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking during an interview on July 9th Wednesday night, Governor Lawal said, “I am still in PDP and have no intention of going anywhere for now.” He clarified that while other parties may have extended invitations, he remains a card-carrying PDP member and has no plans to defect.
He downplayed threats from opposition figureheads in Zamfara, including former governors Sani Yerima, Bello Matawalle, and Abdulaziz Yari, insisting they could not stop his political ascendancy. “These same forces were present during the 2023 elections, yet I emerged victorious,” he said, adding that he remains confident of defeating them again in 2027.
While acknowledging internal challenges within the PDP, Lawal expressed optimism that party leaders were actively working to resolve them. He also affirmed a cordial relationship with President Bola Tinubu, stating, “We may be from different parties, but we enjoy a good relationship.” When asked whether he would support the President in 2027, the governor remained non-committal, saying, “Let’s see how events unfold.”
