AKWA IBOM CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER EMPOWERS PLAZA PHOTOGRAPHERS WITH ₦2.8 MILLION GRANT

In a rare gesture of solidarity and empowerment, the Chief Photographer and Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Governor on Photography, Idara Adiakpan, has extended financial support worth ₦2.8 million to photographers operating at Ibom Connection, popularly known as Ibom Plaza, in Uyo. The initiative, unveiled on July 1, 2025, is not just a personal act of generosity but a reflection of Governor Umo Eno’s broader commitment to enterprise development and youth inclusion under the ARISE Agenda.
Speaking during the presentation of cheques to members of the photographers’ association, Adiakpan described the intervention as an extension of the Governor’s consistent support for the creative industry, small businesses, and young professionals. She noted that photographers play a crucial role in society as chroniclers of history and custodians of memory, adding that their contribution must be supported and recognized at all levels.
“Our job is very important, not just for today but for the future—we preserve memories that could last a lifetime. We are not just photographers; we are image-makers. You are very useful to society. So don’t see yourself as just a photographer, but a very important agent in the creation of history,” she said passionately.
Adiakpan encouraged the photographers to continue supporting the Governor’s administration and to remain committed to excellence in their craft. She emphasized that her appointment as Chief Photographer was a recognition of the value the government places on visual storytellers, and by extension, an acknowledgement of the entire community of lens workers across the state.
The leaders of the photographers’ association, representing the four blocs of Aka Road, Oron Road, Abak Road, and Water Fountain, responded with deep appreciation. They commended Governor Eno for appointing one of their own into government and pledged their continued support for the administration. The gesture has since sparked positive ripples throughout the local creative community, many of whom see it as a rare moment of inclusion and appreciation.
