ASUU MOBILISES UNIVERSITIES FOR STRIKE AS ULTIMATUM NEARS EXPIRATION

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun mobilising its members ahead of a possible nationwide warning strike, as a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government edges toward expiration. The ultimatum was announced on September 28, 2025 following unresolved negotiations.

In a circular dated October 5, 2025, signed by ASUU President Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the union expressed disappointment over what it termed government’s lack of action on a renegotiated agreement submitted earlier in the year (since February 2025). ASUU stated that branches across universities have already conducted a referendum and overwhelmingly supported escalating their actions if demands are not met.

Among the demands are full implementation of the renegotiated agreement, timely payment of outstanding financial obligations, improved infrastructure and working conditions, and better welfare for academic staff. University lecturers are being urged to prepare for the strike, which could affect academic calendars if mediation fails.
