In what could mark a turning point for Bayelsa State’s energy future, the state government has announced the activation of its long-awaited gas turbine power project, designed to provide consistent electricity to Yenagoa and adjoining areas.
The Bayelsa Gas Turbine, which has undergone years of stalled development, is now set for full operation after extensive rehabilitation and reconfiguration in partnership with private energy contractors. Officials confirmed that test runs were successful and full supply is expected within weeks.
Commissioner for Energy, Ebiere Perekeme, said the project would eliminate the chronic blackouts that have plagued Bayelsa for decades, reduce reliance on expensive diesel generators, and create opportunities for industrial and commercial growth.
Governor Douye Diri hailed the project as “a dream realized,” emphasizing its potential to power local manufacturing and attract investment. He said: “We are not just powering homes; we are powering hope, jobs, and productivity for our people.”
The project will operate through gas supplied from the state’s abundant reserves, ensuring cost efficiency and sustainability. Residents and business owners have welcomed the development, calling it a long-overdue step toward stable electricity in the Niger Delta region.
