Enugu South hosts Tax Reform Townhall as stakeholders urge Transparency, Fairness

The Enugu South Local Government Area has hosted a public townhall meeting on tax reforms aimed at improving internally generated revenue while ensuring fairness and sustainability in the state’s tax system.

The meeting, which took place at the Enugu South Council Hall, attracted business owners, market leaders, transport unions, and civil society groups who discussed challenges in tax administration and proposed new approaches to support local economic growth.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Enugu South, Hon. Monday Eneh, said the townhall was part of the government’s efforts to institutionalize participatory governance and accountability in revenue collection.

He noted that the reform process was not intended to overburden citizens but to harmonize levies, curb multiple taxation, and promote transparency.

“We are building a fair tax system that encourages compliance and supports business growth. The goal is sustainability, not exploitation,” Eneh said.

Participants commended the local government’s inclusive approach but urged authorities to ensure that revenue officers are properly trained to avoid extortion and misuse of power.

The government assured stakeholders that their recommendations would be incorporated into the new tax policy framework for implementation.
