The Federal Capital Territory Fire Service has raised urgent concerns about its capacity to respond effectively to emergencies, citing an ageing fleet of fire trucks, critical manpower deficits, and inadequate infrastructure across developing districts in Abuja. Speaking on Monday at the Service’s 23rd anniversary press briefing, Controller Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus said many fire engines have exceeded their optimal operational lifespan and are now costly to maintain, causing frequent breakdowns. Â
He also highlighted that several rapid-growth residential and commercial areas — including Wuse, Mpape, Lugbe and Karshi — still lack fire stations, leaving them particularly vulnerable in the event of major incidents. The Service further noted that its manpower numbers have not kept pace with the FCT’s expansion, limiting its coverage and response times. Public safety experts feel the warning is significant, warning of potential major losses if emergency services are not modernised. The FCT Fire Service is now appealing for increased budget allocations, new vehicle acquisitions and staffing reform to align its capabilities to the capital’s growth
