In a landmark achievement for one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing alternative sports, both the men’s and women’s national flag football teams clinched gold medals at the 2025 African Flag Football Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.
The Nigerian women’s team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Morocco 28–7 in a dazzling final display. The men’s team edged out host nation Egypt with a dramatic 13–12 finish, earning widespread praise for their discipline and tactical brilliance.
The championship, sanctioned by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), marked Nigeria’s most successful outing in the sport, establishing the country as a continental powerhouse in flag football.
Minister of Sports Senator John Enoh and top officials from the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) hailed the victory, with calls now mounting for greater state and private sector investment to solidify Nigeria’s dominance.
“This is not a fluke. It is the result of grassroots structure, good coaching, and strategic leadership,” said NAFA Director of Development, Chuka Enekwechi.
The players returned home to a hero’s welcome at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Preparations are already underway for Nigeria’s participation in global tournaments later this year.
