Senate suspends debate on Standing Orders Amendments

The Senate has put on hold its planned debate over proposed amendments to its 2023 Standing Orders.

The motion to update the orders which would realign committee jurisdictions, modernize procedural rules for suspensions, and reflect new geopolitical commissions was introduced by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

During debate, however, Minority Leader Abba Moro raised a point of order questioning some of the proposed changes, especially around the rules for suspending senators.   Senate President Godswill Akpabio agreed and deferred further discussion, stating that clarity is needed before moving forward.

He added that when debate resumes, the chamber will consider the changes in a “committee of the whole” format, and if approved, the new Standing Orders will be reprinted to reflect updates.
