The House of Representatives has passed a bill for a second reading that seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to lower the minimum age for Senate and governorship candidacy from 35 to 30 years.
The bill—sponsored by Hon. Esin Etim and 24 other lawmakers—argues that the current age threshold creates a barrier for young Nigerians, especially those who enter politics early.
Etim emphasized that many young representatives begin their careers in their twenties but remain ineligible to run for higher office even after serving two terms. By reducing the age limit, the bill aims to encourage youth political participation without distorting the traditional progression between legislative offices.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, referred the bill to the Committee on Constitution Review for further legislative work.
