POST-ELECTION VIOLENCE in UGANDA leaves DOZENS DEAD, THOUSANDS DETAINED

At least 30 opposition supporters have been reported killed and about 2,000 detained following a disputed presidential election in Uganda, a situation drawing international concern and deepening political tensions in the East African nation.

The violence unfolded after the January 15, 2026 election, in which President Yoweri Museveni, 81, was declared the winner with approximately 72 percent of the vote, securing a seventh term in office. Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), who officially received about 25 percent of votes, rejected the outcome as fraudulent and urged supporters to protest.

According to statements by Uganda’s army chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the deaths occurred amid security operations targeting supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Wine’s political party. Kainerugaba, who is also President Museveni’s son and commands the land forces, described those killed in postings on the social platform X, using terms that have been widely criticised by observers. Security forces have also arrested thousands of individuals in connection with alleged demonstrations and unrest.

The period following the election has been marked by heightened repression, an internet shutdown during voting, and frequent clashes between police and opposition supporters. Reports indicate some arrests occurred during raids on homes and other locations.

Opposition figures and human rights advocates have condemned the crackdown and called for international scrutiny, while the United Nations Secretary-General has expressed concern about the scale of detentions and fatalities, urging respect for human rights and lawful public order.

The incident underscores broader anxieties about democratic governance, political freedoms, and security force conduct in Uganda, where peaceful transfers of power have not occurred since independence.
