The Nigeria Democratic Congress (Nigeria Democratic Congress) has firmly dismissed allegations that its leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, is aligned with President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (All Progressives Congress) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an interview, the party’s spokesman, Abdulmumin Ohiare Abdulsalam, rejected claims describing Dickson as a “mercenary” for the presidency. He insisted that the former Bayelsa State governor remains ideologically committed to the NDC and has no political or strategic ties with the Tinubu-led administration.
According to Abdulsalam, Senator Seriake Dickson Seriake Dickson has maintained a consistent political identity rooted in nationalist and progressive ideals throughout his career. He stressed that Dickson is “fully committed” to building the party’s structure and positioning it for success in 2027.
The spokesman also clarified internal discussions within the party regarding its emerging presidential race. He said consultations are ongoing among key figures, including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as the party weighs options for its presidential ticket.
He noted that while only Peter Obi has officially picked and been screened for nomination so far, the party could still adopt him as its candidate if no other aspirant emerges. In such a scenario, Kwankwaso could potentially serve as running mate, depending on internal negotiations.
Abdulsalam further addressed speculation about the recent defection of a politician named Fubara, clarifying that it was not Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, but rather his brother who joined the party.
On preparations for upcoming elections, the NDC says it is already gearing up for a by-election in Nasarawa following the death of a senator. It added that candidate selection will vary by region, with some constituencies adopting primaries while others may settle for consensus arrangements.
Party leaders emphasized that the goal is to manage internal competition carefully, avoid factional disputes, and ensure transparent processes as it builds momentum toward the 2027 elections.
