Senators from the South-West geopolitical zone, in collaboration with stakeholders across the region, have intensified their advocacy for the creation of state police, describing the federal policing model as outdated and incapable of addressing localized violence.
During a security policy roundtable in Abuja, the lawmakers said rising kidnappings, banditry attacks, and cross-border criminal operations demonstrate that centralized command structures cannot effectively respond to grassroots security needs. They argued that community-informed policing backed by state legislation remains the only long-term solution.
They also recommended integrating Amotekun into a constitutionally recognized state police architecture and adopting technology-driven surveillance systems.
