United States Congressman Rep. Riley M. Moore has publicly urged the Nigerian government to disarm violent groups in the Middle Belt, calling the region’s escalating killings a humanitarian crisis that requires urgent action.
Speaking during a foreign-policy forum, he said prolonged impunity has emboldened armed groups responsible for village raids, religious killings, and farmland destruction. He insisted that the Nigerian government must combine military operations with human-rights-compliant disarmament programs, community reconciliation, and transparent justice mechanisms.
Human rights organizations welcomed the Congressman’s remarks, saying international pressure could compel more decisive action. Nigerian officials, however, maintain that they are already deploying additional security resources and implementing conflict mitigation strategies
