WINU CONDEMNS MASSACRE OF IGBO YOUTHS IN IMO, DEMANDS JUSTICE AND SECURITY REFORMS

The World Igbo National Union (WINU) has issued a scathing condemnation over what it called the “gruesome killings” of innocent Igbo youths in Umualaoma Arondizuogu, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, following the circulation of a harrowing video on July 24, 2025.
In a press statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ifeanyi Uwakwe, the group expressed deep outrage at both the incident and the silence of the Imo State government, describing it as “disheartening and unacceptable.”
“We express our deepest condolences to the families affected by this heinous act and stand in solidarity with the people of Ideato,” the statement read. “The silence of the Imo State government on this urgent matter is disheartening and unacceptable. It is imperative that government authorities issue a formal statement condemning these actions and reinforcing their commitment to the protection of lives within our communities.”
WINU did not mince words in demanding accountability. The group called on the Imo State Government to immediately initiate a full-scale, transparent investigation into the killings and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted. Furthermore, it urged all South Eastern governors to urgently scale up regional security measures in light of escalating threats.
“This should include sponsoring local vigilantes and installing security cameras in strategic locations to bolster effective policing,” the union emphasized. WINU also raised red flags over the activities of suspected “Fulani terrorist invaders,” warning that infiltration into southeastern neighborhoods poses a real and growing danger to indigenous communities.
Beyond governmental responsibilities, the union issued a call to action for communal vigilance. Youths across all southeastern communities were urged to be alert and monitor the activities of unfamiliar individuals within their localities. “Security is a collective responsibility,” the statement declared. “We must work together to thwart any attempts by foreign invaders to undermine our safety and well-being.”
WINU also expressed alarm over controversial comments allegedly made by Niger Delta militant leader, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, who reportedly claimed responsibility for attacks against Igbo youths in Imo and Anambra States. The group questioned why such self-admitted violence could go unpunished.
“His continued freedom following such admissions is alarming and raises questions about accountability and law enforcement,” the union asserted. “We call for the immediate arrest of Asari Dokubo and all individuals involved in these violent acts. The Department of State Services (DSS) must take decisive action to ensure that justice is served.”
Reaffirming its position on peace, dignity, and security for the Igbo people, the World Igbo National Union vowed not to relent in its pursuit of justice. “We will not tolerate any form of extrajudicial killings or violence in Igbo land. The systematic oppression of our people must end. We will remain vigilant and actively seek justice for our community, ensuring that no more lives are lost senselessly,” the statement concluded.
The chilling incident and WINU’s robust reaction underscore growing fears across southeastern Nigeria over rising insecurity, deepening distrust in government responses, and renewed calls for decisive, community-centered protective measures.
