Abuja, Nigeria — Aminu Sani, 18, has been formally issued a commercial pilot licence by the Nigerian civil aviation regulator, becoming the youngest licensed commercial pilot in the country’s history. Sani completed required flight hours, examinations and safety assessments ahead of schedule, impressing examiners with his discipline and technical competence.
Sani trained at an accredited flight school, benefitted from mentorship programmes and logged both solo and supervised cross-country flights required for certification. Aviation stakeholders highlighted his achievement as a positive signal for youth participation in technical professions, and an example of how targeted scholarships and cadet programmes can accelerate skills development in the sector.
The regulator said it will feature Sani in outreach efforts to encourage young people to consider aviation careers and urged airlines and training institutions to expand cadetship schemes. Industry experts called for strengthened training infrastructure and funding pathways for aspiring pilots, noting that high costs of training remain a barrier for many talented youths.
Sani said he hopes to inspire other young Nigerians and intends to specialise in commercial passenger operations while advocating for greater access to scholarships and mentorship for disadvantaged candidates seeking aviation careers.
