PDP VOWS COURT ACTION OVER OKOWA, OBOREVWORI DEFECTIONS
Reeling from a wave of high-profile defections in Delta State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to challenge the defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa in court, describing the moves as unconstitutional. At a press conference following a National Working Committee meeting in Abuja, acting National Chairman Umar Damagum confirmed that the party had dissolved its Delta structures and installed a caretaker team led by South-South Zonal Chair, Emma Ogidi.
Damagum said the party would pursue litigation to reclaim what he termed a “stolen mandate,” arguing that both Oborevwori and Okowa were elected on the PDP platform and must vacate their positions if they no longer represent the party. “This is about accountability. You can’t reap from the PDP and then turn around to betray it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Okowa revealed that his defection was preceded by consultation with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, dismissing claims of coercion by anti-graft agencies. The party plans to hold its next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27, ahead of a major convention in August aimed at rebuilding trust and unity within its ranks.
