Former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has acknowledged the internal crises plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following President Bola Tinubu’s jab at the opposition during his Democracy Day address.
Tinubu, in a speech at the National Assembly on Thursday June 12 , took a swipe at his rivals, saying, “It is a joy to see the opposition in disarray… I will not help you to put your house in order.” The president, however, denied allegations that his administration was orchestrating defections to force a one-party state, insisting he supports a healthy multi-party democracy.
Reacting shortly after the event, Saraki admitted that the PDP was indeed battling internal challenges but reaffirmed that the party would resolve them. “We must take him at his word,” Saraki said. “He says he is not for a one-party state, and we accept that. So now, we must do our part to get our house in order.”
Saraki, a former PDP presidential aspirant and Senate President between 2015 and 2019, noted that party leaders have been making moves to rebuild unity and attract disillusioned members. He dismissed claims that the opposition was under pressure to dissolve or defect, saying, “There is no pressure anymore. We are all for multiparty democracy, and we’ll sort ourselves out.”
His comments signal a potential pivot in the PDP’s strategy as it looks to regroup ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid continuing defections and power struggles in several state chapters.
