Following the intervention of Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the Mayor of Aba South LGA, Obialor Anyanwu, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reopened select shops in Aba that were previously shut down over the sale of fake and adulterated drugs.
On December 16, 2024, NAFDAC sealed several markets, including Eziukwu Market, due to concerns over illicit pharmaceutical activities. However, after a review, NAFDAC’s South-East Zonal Director, Pharmacist Martins Iluyomade, confirmed that innocent traders whose businesses were unfairly affected had been allowed to reopen.
He warned that only traders without pending cases would regain access, while those dealing in pharmaceuticals would remain under scrutiny.
Governor Otti’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to combating counterfeit goods. He called on traders to adopt a “see something, say something” approach to prevent illegal activities.
Market leaders, including representatives from Eziukwu Road Market and Ariaria International Market, expressed gratitude to the governor for his intervention, pledging to report any further illicit activities.
