AKPABIO DEFENDS EXECUTIVE-LEGISLATURE RELATIONSHIP

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to collaborating with the executive to drive development, stating that lawmakers are not elected to be adversarial but to legislate for national progress. In a yet-to-be-released State House documentary marking President Tinubu’s second year in office, Akpabio said the Assembly is prioritising policies that reduce import dependence and promote local manufacturing. He revealed an ongoing legislative effort to compel Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prioritise the procurement of Nigeria-assembled vehicles. Akpabio bemoaned the collapse of key sectors like textiles, cotton, and palm oil, and cited Malaysia’s economic rise through palm oil as a missed opportunity for Nigeria. Defending the legislature against accusations of being a rubber stamp, he listed major oversight activities and bills like the Student Loan Act, tax reform initiatives, and the Minimum Wage Bill as evidence of proactive governance. He promised more pro-people laws to reduce hardship, empower youth, and boost the local economy.
