The Akwa Ibom State Government has intervened in the boundary dispute between Ikot Udo village in Ika Local Government Area and Akrika Obu in Ukwa East, Abia State.
Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Boundary Committee, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, led a delegation to Ika LGA on Monday, urging both communities to embrace peace. She assured that the Governors of Akwa Ibom and Abia States would soon reach an agreement on the ongoing construction of the Abiaka-Ikot Udo road.
To prevent further conflict, Senator Eyakenyi, alongside her Abia counterpart, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, announced the temporary suspension of road construction work at the disputed area until a concrete resolution is reached.
“We have agreed that construction should start from the Abia side, giving the two Governors time to reach an understanding that will bring lasting peace,” she said.
The Deputy Governor also revealed that the National Boundary Commission would soon step in to officially demarcate the boundary.
Meanwhile, Engr. Emetu reaffirmed Abia State’s commitment to peaceful resolution, clarifying that the road project was not an attempt at land grabbing.
Local leaders from both sides expressed concerns and called for a swift intervention to prevent further tension. Present at the meeting were top government officials, security agencies, and traditional rulers from both states.
