British-Nigerian boxing icon Anthony Joshua has spoken publicly for the first time following the fatal road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his closest friends and longtime team members, Latif “Latz” Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
The crash occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, leaving Joshua injured and resulting in the deaths of Ayodele and Ghami, both aged 36. In a video released on his official social media platforms, the former world heavyweight champion expressed deep grief over the loss, describing the two men as integral figures in both his personal life and professional career.
Joshua reflected on their close bond, noting that plans had been made to conclude the year together before the tragedy unfolded. He acknowledged the emotional toll of the incident on himself, the victims’ families, and their wider circle, emphasizing that the two men had played significant roles in shaping his journey inside and outside the ring.
The boxer reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the families of the deceased, indicating a long-term responsibility to help fulfill their personal and family aspirations. He also expressed gratitude to first responders, medical professionals at Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, and several prominent figures and institutions for providing medical, logistical, and emotional support in the aftermath of the crash.
Among those acknowledged were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, President Bola Tinubu, senior security officials, British diplomatic representatives, and business leaders who assisted in facilitating Joshua’s treatment and eventual return to the United Kingdom.
The accident is currently under legal review, with the driver involved, Adeniyi Kayode, facing charges in Ogun State. The matter has been adjourned pending further legal guidance from the state’s Attorney-General’s office.
The incident has triggered widespread public sympathy and renewed conversations around road safety, emergency response preparedness, and the psychological impact of sudden tragedy on elite athletes and public figures.
