ARMY WARNS AGAINST ILLEGAL MILITARY UNIFORMS
The Nigerian Army has issued a stern warning to citizens against the illegal use of military uniforms, underscoring the negative impact this has on national security and public trust. Major General Gold Chibuisi, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, made the statement during a media interaction in Abuja, where he emphasized that wearing military attire without authorization is not only unlawful but also fosters criminal behavior.
The misuse of military uniforms has become increasingly problematic, with criminals exploiting the attire to perpetrate crimes and create confusion. Chibuisi noted that the growing trend of civilians impersonating soldiers makes it more difficult for security agencies and the public to distinguish between legitimate personnel and those with criminal intent.
“Uniforms are sacred, and their unauthorized use undermines the integrity and safety of the Armed Forces. Anyone not part of the security agencies wearing such attire is committing a crime,” Chibuisi stated. He also addressed concerns regarding harassment and violence against civilians wearing military gear, affirming that while the practice is illegal, soldiers are expected to handle such cases with professionalism and restraint, referring offenders to the police for prosecution.
Chibuisi called on families and communities to play a role in curbing this practice, urging them to discourage individuals from wearing military uniforms if they are not authorized to do so. He further pointed out the importance of public perception in strengthening national unity, stressing that soldiers must be seen as trusted members of the community rather than distant, intimidating figures.
