Astronaut Salis calls for law banning political thugs, links politicians to criminality

Former Nigerian astronaut and polar-explorer, Owolabi Salis, has issued a public appeal urging the government to enact legislation banning politicians from hiring thugs and hooligans.

Salis argues that the use of hired muscle by politicians fuels violence, serial criminality and heightens insecurity often spilling beyond election periods into banditry, kidnapping, and social unrest.   He suggested that instead of private gangs, those in need of security should rely on legitimate institutions such as the police or licensed security outfits, which can be held accountable under the law.

Highlighting the widespread fear of violence that deters many from participating in elections, Salis emphasized that outlawing political thugs would help restore trust in Nigeria’s political process and strengthen democratic stability.

He called on the presidency and the National Assembly to treat the proposal with urgency, and appealed to civil society groups, non-governmental organisations, and citizens to demand immediate action toward legal reform.
