Benin main opposition party barred from 2026 presidential race

In a controversial ruling on 27 October 2025, the Les Démocrates the main opposition party in the Republic of Benin was officially excluded from participating in the 2026 presidential election.

The disqualification was based on a technicality: the country’s electoral commission rejected the party’s candidate slate for failing to meet the minimum sponsorship threshold, a legal requirement under electoral rules. The Constitutional Court upheld the decision, rejecting appeals that alleged violations of democratic norms. With Les Démocrates out, the electoral field is drastically narrowed. Only two tickets remain, one aligned with the incumbent establishment and one from a minor opposition grouping  raising serious doubts among civil society, international observers and many citizens about the competitiveness and fairness of the vote.

Critics argue this move deals a heavy blow to Benin’s once‑lauded democratic credentials. They warn that sidelining a major opposition force undermines pluralism and could fuel political apathy, eroding public confidence in institutions and the electoral process. As campaigns gear up ahead of the April 2026 poll, all eyes will be on whether elections go ahead with real competition or whether the result will amount to little more than formal confirmation of the ruling elite’s hold on power.
