BENJAMIN KALU SAYS CLIMATE CHANGE IS A ‘LIVING CRISIS’ DEVASTATING NIGERIA’S COMMUNITIES

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has raised the alarm over the destructive impacts of climate change across Nigeria, describing it as a “living crisis” with severe social, economic, and humanitarian consequences.
Kalu issued the warning during a meeting with representatives of the National Council on Climate Change and the Green Climate Fund. He cited alarming data showing floods displacing over 2.5 million people and causing $6.8 million in economic losses in 2022 alone. He warned that desertification, drought, erosion, and sea-level rise are simultaneously devastating different parts of the country—from the North to the Niger Delta and South-East.
He praised the 2021 Climate Change Act as a landmark legislative achievement but expressed concern that the Climate Change Fund established by the Act remains non-functional. Kalu called on international partners to help activate the fund and said, “Climate finance is the oxygen of climate action.”
