Cameroon opposition leader flees to Gambia amid post‑election tension

Opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary has taken refuge in Gambia, as political tensions in Cameroon continue to escalate following a contested presidential election. Gambia’s Ministry of Information confirmed Tchiroma’s arrival on November 7, describing his presence as “temporary” and “purely on humanitarian grounds” to ensure his safety.

Tchiroma, who ran against long‑time ruler President Paul Biya, has rejected the official results of the October 12 election. He claimed victory and called on Cameroonians to contest the declared outcome, which awarded Biya an eighth term. The Cameroonian government, however, has threatened legal action against him, accusing him of inciting insurrection.

Since the announcement of the results, widespread protests have rocked several cities — notably Douala, Maroua, and Garoua — resulting in a significant number of casualties. While official government statements put the death toll at 16, opposition figures and human rights groups estimate the number of lives lost to be much higher.

Gambia has stated it is coordinating with regional partners, including Nigeria, to support a peaceful and negotiated resolution to the political standoff.
