Cameroon’s opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary has given authorities a 48-hour ultimatum to release all individuals detained in connection with post-election protests that erupted after the country’s disputed polls. Tchiroma, leader of the National Front for the Salvation of Cameroon, has accused security forces of unlawfully holding dozens of opposition members and civil society activists.
The ultimatum adds tension to an already volatile political environment following allegations of widespread irregularities and vote manipulation. Rights groups have documented arbitrary arrests, the use of excessive force against protesters, and restrictions on media coverage. Observers warn that if the government fails to respond swiftly, the situation could escalate into a broader political crisis, undermining national stability and public confidence in state institutions.
