Kaduna — The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), represented by Governor Olayemi Cardoso and Acting Director of Corporate Communications Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, has issued a stern warning to Nigerians to desist from spraying, hawking, mutilating, or counterfeiting the Naira. The admonition came during the CBN Fair held in Kaduna, under the theme “Driving Alternative Payment Channels as Tools for Financial Inclusion, Growth and Accelerated Economic Development.”
Cardoso described the Nigerian currency as a “critical national symbol” whose integrity must be preserved. He emphasized that such acts as spraying money at events, hawking notes on streets, or mutilating currency degrade its value and image, and contravene policies meant to ensure the Naira remains respected and useful.
Beyond warning, the Bank used the platform to educate the public about the bank’s monetary policies, reforms in the payment system, and efforts to promote price stability and financial inclusion. The CBN also talked about ongoing interventions affecting SMEs, foreign investment inflows, and trade balances that are showing signs of improvement.
