CONTROVERSY IN KANO AS LGAs DIRECTED TO FUND EMIR’S VEHICLES WITH ₦670 MILLION
A leaked official letter has sparked political debate in Kano State, revealing that all 44 local government areas have been instructed to contribute over ₦15.2 million each—totaling ₦670 million—for the purchase and refurbishment of vehicles for the Kano Emirate Council, now under the leadership of reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The directive, dated March 25, 2025, and signed by a senior official in the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, authorises the payment to Sottom Synergy Resources Ltd for the supply of four brand-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser VXRs and the restoration of two vintage royal vehicles: a 1969 Rolls Royce and a Cadillac limousine.
The directive is to be implemented via deductions from the State/Local Government Joint Account. It has triggered mixed reactions. Critics argue the move is fiscally irresponsible at a time when local governments are struggling with staff salaries, infrastructure collapse, and social service deficits. Supporters say the gesture reflects a commitment to restoring the prestige of the Kano Emirate, especially after Emir Sanusi’s controversial reinstatement earlier this year.
The state government is yet to formally respond to public backlash or clarify the financial rationale behind the expenditure.
