A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, popularly known as Corper Raye, has gone viral after declaring that she stopped attending church because she realized that many challenges facing Nigerians are rooted in economic hardship, not spiritual battles.
Speaking candidly in a social media video, Raye recounted how she grew up believing that misfortune stemmed from family curses, witchcraft, or generational setbacks. However, she said her outlook changed when she observed that poverty, unemployment, and inflation were the real culprits limiting progress for young people.
“You’re not cursed. Nothing is wrong with your family. What is holding you back is this country’s economy,” she said emphatically.
Her comments have ignited widespread debate online. Supporters praised her for challenging what they described as “over-spiritualization” of Nigeria’s problems, while critics accused her of disregarding the importance of faith. Many commentators noted that her views reflect a growing generational shift, where young Nigerians demand practical solutions to systemic problems rather than solely relying on religious intervention.
