President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defended his choice of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing his integrity and apolitical disposition as key reasons for the nomination.
In a statement, Tinubu said the nomination reflects his administration’s commitment to restoring public trust in electoral institutions. He noted that Amupitan’s reputation as a respected academic and legal practitioner made him an ideal candidate to lead INEC during a critical period ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tinubu’s remarks come amid growing attention to the transition at INEC following the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu after two terms. Observers have pointed to Amupitan’s appointment as a chance for reform within the Commission, urging him to uphold independence and fairness in administering future polls.
