CONGO TO BAN COBALT EXPORTERS WHO BREACH PRODUCTION QUOTAS

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced a permanent ban on cobalt exporters who fail to comply with national production quotas, in a bid to tighten control over its vast mineral wealth.

Congo produces more than 70 percent of the world’s cobalt, a critical component in batteries for electric vehicles and smartphones. However, the sector has long been plagued by illegal mining, smuggling, and exploitation by foreign firms.

The government said the new policy aims to “protect national interests and ensure fair distribution of resources.” Exporters found violating quotas or engaging in under-reporting will lose their licenses permanently.

The move has rattled global markets, as cobalt is already in high demand due to the green energy transition. International investors fear supply disruptions, while rights groups are pressing the government to ensure reforms also address child labor and unsafe mining conditions.

Analysts say the decision reflects Congo’s growing assertiveness in global resource politics, positioning itself not just as a supplier but as a regulator of critical minerals.
