Devastating Windstorm Tears Through Kwara, Destroys Over 200 Homes

A violent windstorm has wreaked havoc in Kwara State, leaving a trail of destruction that displaced hundreds of residents and severely damaged public infrastructure. The storm, which struck on Sunday, March 30, 2025, hit Ilorin and the Ogele/Eyenkorin area of Asa Local Government, toppling buildings and plunging many areas into darkness.

Eyewitnesses report that the powerful storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, disrupted Eid-el-Fitr celebrations and left over 200 homes without roofs. Several schools and businesses were also severely affected, including Ogele Primary School, Ansarul-Deen Primary School, and Government Day Secondary School, where roofs were completely blown off. More than 15 private schools suffered structural damage, with some classrooms collapsing entirely.

Electrical infrastructure was not spared, as power lines and poles were torn down, cutting off electricity to multiple communities. In Ilorin West Local Government, debris from the storm clogged drainage systems, causing flooding near the Kuntu Bridge.

Residents, many of whom are now homeless, are pleading for urgent government intervention. Zubairu Abiola, Vice Chairman of the Ifelodun community in Eyenkorin, described the situation as dire, urging Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq to provide emergency relief.

“The storm has left many people without shelter. We appeal to the governor to come to our aid as he has always done,” Abiola said.

State authorities are expected to assess the damage and deploy relief efforts in the coming days.
