The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested two key suspects linked to the brutal killing of 16 Nigerians of northern extraction in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State last week.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpehbolo, Fred Itua, the suspects were apprehended in Uromi following credible intelligence. Security operatives are now intensifying efforts to track down other individuals connected to the attack.
Following their arrest, the suspects were immediately transferred to Abuja for further interrogation and prosecution as directed by the Inspector-General of Police. In addition, 14 other suspects arrested in connection with the crime have also been moved to the Force Headquarters for ongoing investigations.
Also, discussions between the Edo and Kano State governments are underway to determine appropriate compensation for the families of the victims. Governor Okpehbolo had previously assured the bereaved families of support during his visit to Kano. However, officials have yet to confirm whether the compensation will be financial or take another form.
In Uromi, fear has gripped the local community as residents reportedly flee their homes to avoid being caught in the ongoing security crackdown. On Monday, 31st of March, women from the area staged a protest at the Ojuromi of Uromi’s palace, condemning what they described as indiscriminate arrests by security forces.
One resident, Michael, expressed concern over the situation. “People are leaving their homes because they fear being arrested. The protest by the women was to express their frustration with the mass arrests taking place,” he said.
As security agencies continue their operations, tension remains high in the affected communities.
