The Edo State House of Assembly has taken decisive action against poor execution on a road infrastructure project by summoning the contractor responsible for an internal road contract in the Oza community of Orhionmwon Local Government Area. The move underlines growing legislative scrutiny of public works and concerns about quality, accountability and value for money in state‑funded projects.
Members of the Assembly’s Committee on Project Inspection called the contractor before lawmakers to answer questions on alleged substandard performance on the 1.6‑kilometre internal roads project, which has drawn sharp criticism from residents and local leaders. The committee also invited representatives of the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDSOPADEC), which is the intervention agency overseeing the initiative.
Lawmakers signalled that the hearing is part of a broader oversight mandate to ensure that contractors meet contract specifications and deliver infrastructure that benefits residents. They emphasised that civil works should be executed to the expected standard, adding that the project inspection panel will issue a report with recommendations for remedial action if necessary.
The Assembly’s intervention follows on the heels of an extended project inspection tour initiated by Speaker Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku, who has directed the panel to assess the status of key state projects and advance accountability in public spending. Observers say the heightened legislative oversight is part of a trend aimed at reducing waste, improving service delivery and restoring public confidence in infrastructure programmes.
