EDO GOVERNMENT RESTRUCTURES STATE SECURITY CORPS AMID RISING VIOLENCE

In response to escalating security challenges across Edo State, the state government has announced a comprehensive restructuring of its local security architecture, including the recruitment of over 1,400 new personnel into the state’s security corps. Governor Monday Okpebholo disclosed the reforms during a security stakeholders meeting held in Benin City on July 8, following the killing of three members of a local vigilante group in a suspected cult-related ambush. The governor condemned the incident as “senseless and unacceptable,” pledging that his administration would not allow criminal elements to undermine public safety. Under the restructured plan, the Edo State Security Network will receive expanded logistics, enhanced training, and closer integration with conventional federal security agencies. A new Task Force on Rural Surveillance and Urban Response is also being launched to improve emergency reaction times and intelligence gathering. The Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, announced that new officers have already commenced training at designated centers across the state. “Our approach now is both proactive and preventive. We are investing in personnel, equipment, and community trust,” he said. Residents have welcomed the initiative, though some have expressed concerns over the sustainability and political neutrality of the state-backed vigilante force. Rights groups are also calling for stronger oversight to prevent abuse of power and unlawful detentions. With the new structure, the state hopes to reduce the frequency of cult clashes, robberies, and inter-community violence, which have intensified in recent months.
