Former Minister of Labour and Productivity and ex-Anambra State Governor Dr. Chris Ngige is expected to be arraigned in court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his arrest in Abuja earlier this week. Ngige, who served in the cabinet of former President Muhammadu Buhari, was taken into custody by EFCC operatives from its Wuse II zonal office after being questioned as part of an ongoing investigation.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Ngige may face charges related to alleged financial misconduct, with the EFCC planning to formally bring him before a court to address the accusations. The retired minister had previously cooperated with the anti-graft agency and was on administrative bail before his arrest, prompting speculation about the timing and nature of the fresh charges.
The arrest triggered public concern and speculation, with some initial rumours suggesting abduction, a claim promptly refuted by Ngige’s media aide, who clarified that he is in EFCC custody and not kidnapped.
Ngige’s situation comes amid heightened anti-corruption enforcement by the EFCC, which has pursued several high-profile cases this year. Observers say the forthcoming arraignment could shine a spotlight on alleged graft involving public officials, underscoring ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability in governance.
