El-Rufai Rejects Merger, Urges Atiku, Obi, Other to Join SDP

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has dismissed the possibility of a merger among opposition parties, instead urging Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 2027 elections.

El-Rufai, who recently resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), criticized President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, saying he had failed to deliver on expectations. “We supported Tinubu because of his achievements in Lagos, but he has failed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has insisted that Tinubu is focused on governance, not the 2027 elections. Presidential media aide Sunday Dare highlighted improvements in foreign reserves, inflation, and trade balance, emphasizing that Tinubu is determined to leave a lasting impact on Nigeria’s economy.

El-Rufai, however, left his own political ambitions open, stating, “It’s up to the party and the people to decide.”
